To apply for a your green card renewal, you must be a lawful permanent resident whose 10-year green card has expired or will expire within 6 months. The only form you need to fill out is the form 1-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card). You may also request to change your name on your green card (because of marriage, divorce or legal name change) at the time you file your application. To do so, you must provide a copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order as evidence of the legal name change.
Read form 1-90 carefully and note the documentation and photos that must be submitted. Detailed instructions are provided with the form 1-90. unless otherwise instructed, you should file your application (with supporting documents and fees) in person at the appropriate Application Support Center (ASC) serving the area where you live. At the time you file your form 1-90, you will be provided with temporary evidence of your lawful permanent residence status. If your renewal application is approved, you will be mailed a new green card with a 10-year expiration date.
What if you are outside the United States?
If you are outside the United States, and your permanent resident card will expire within 6 months, but you will return within 1 year of your departure from the United States and before the card expires, you should file for a renewal card as soon as you return to the United States. If you are outside the United States at the time of the card's expiration date, and you have not applied for the renewal prior to your departure, you should contact the nearest United States embassy, consulate, immigration office or port of entry, before attempting to file the form 1-90 for a renewal green card.

To check the status of your application, please contact the ASC that received your application. You should be prepared to provide the ASC staff with specific information about your application, such as your Alien Registration Number, name and date of birth.
